Its the rainy season in northern Malawi, and WorldHope Corps stands ready to distribute at least 1000 mosquito nets in 12 rural villages and one city prison–by request and coordination with the government’s District Health Department.

A total of $10,000 is needed to purchase and distribute 1000 Mosquito Nets in rural villages and prisons in Malaria that were left out in previous “Nothing But Nets” distributions in Malawi.  So far, $8500 has been contributed to WorldHope Corps for this mission, leaving just $1,500 still needed in order to mobilize for a January distribution. Donations
of any amount will help!

Dennis Singini, Program Director for
WorldHope Malawi, submitted this mission update last week in preparation for
project mobilization:

“Since I returned
from the USA tour, our team has visited 22 villages across Mzuzu and outside
Mzuzu City to assess the need for mosquito nets.  After meeting with the
District Health
Officer (DHO) in the government office, we agreed to focus on 11 villages which
did not receive enough nets during a previous distribution.

The DHO also told us that nets had not been distributed
to prisons and boarding schools near Mzuzu.
We agreed to purchase and distribute up to 1,000 nets and began work on
a “No More Malaria” mosquito net distribution plan.

We
met with the Malaria Project Coordinator to avoid duplication and agreed to
distribute our nets first to the Zolozolo community which has over 5,000 residents,  then to Mzuzu Prison with 600 prisoners.  We are targeting only women prisoners with
little children, juveniles, and those who are clinically ill in prison. See
table below for details.

In
addition to the above communities, the DHO will assign us two more villages
outside Mzuzu City to distribute the nets.
This will increase our total distribution to 1,000 mosquito nets in
rural villages and prisons.

To
fulfill this assignment, WorldHope Corps requires $6,500 to buy 1,000 nets and
approximately $3,500 to transport, deliver and direct the program, for a total
of $10,000.
